The Secret To Unshakeable Confidence By Embracing Your Flaws

We as humans are far from perfect but there’s a strong belief that one needs to be perfect to feel confident. But always trying to be perfect can make you feel less sure of yourself.

What if feeling good about yourself comes from accepting your mistakes and learning from them?

True confidence isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being okay with not being perfect and learning from mistakes.

To feel more confident, try accepting your flaws, celebrating even the small wins, learning from challenges, being kind to yourself, listening to advice and enjoying the journey, not just the end goal.

“Faking it” might help a bit at first, but real confidence comes from believing in yourself.

Let’s talk about how you can feel more confident by being okay with not being perfect. Join us as we learn to build real confidence by embracing who we are, mistakes and all.

A little disclaimer, I’m far from being the most confident person I know. Life has been harsh to me in some ways but I’ve found ways to like what I see in the mirror these days.

The Myth Of Perfection

Have you noticed that everywhere you look, especially on social media, everything seems perfect? People show off perfect lives, perfect looks and perfect achievements.

But the truth is, chasing this kind of perfection can make us feel pretty bad and inadequate. Trying to reach something that’s not even real can leave us feeling tired, unhappy, and like we’re never good enough.

Aiming for perfection might look good from the outside but it’s not as great as it seems. It’s better to be happy with being “good enough” and enjoy life with all its ups and downs.

Understanding Confidence

Confidence is when you feel sure about yourself and your abilities. It’s important not just in your personal life but also at work.

There are two main places confidence comes from.

External confidence is when outside factors boost how you feel about yourself. For example, we all love getting compliments which might make you feel good for a bit.

Internal confidence is deeper. It’s about believing in yourself, even without any external validation. Like knowing you can succeed in your business even though everyone else says no.

Internal confidence to me is where the power is at. It is what will lift you up and reignite the fire when the odds are against you.

Strategies For Building Confidence Without Perfection

i can

1. Embrace Your Imperfections

NO one is perfect. Not you, not me. And the faster you can internalize this, the faster you can start to build your self-confidence.

Instead of beating yourself up over your flaws, try to accept them.

For example, if public speaking isn’t your strong suit, it’s okay. Just remember the other ways you’re good at sharing ideas, like writing or talking one-on-one..

You can even turn this weakness into a strength by taking classes or practicing more, showing yourself that you can improve and grow.

2. Celebrate Small Wins

Every step forward no matter how tiny is progress. Did you speak up in a meeting, even though you were nervous? That’s a win!

Celebrating these moments helps build your confidence bit by bit. It’s like adding coins to a piggy bank. Over time, you’ll see how much you’ve saved up.

This practice keeps you motivated and maintains a positive outlook, even on tough days.

Every journey begins with a single step.

3. Cultivate A Growth Mindset

Having a growth mindset means believing that you can develop and improve through effort and perseverance. When you face a challenge, see it as a chance to learn something new, not as a threat.

Giving up is easy but it takes confidence and belief to soldier on when the going gets tough.

This approach builds resilience which helps you bounce back from setbacks.

4. Practice Self-Compassion

Be as kind to yourself if you are going through a tough time. If you make a mistake or face a setback, don’t be too hard on yourself.

Understand that failure is part of the learning process.

Techniques like mindfulness and positive self-talk can help you treat yourself with kindness. Remember that being compassionate towards yourself makes it easier to face and overcome the fear of failure.

5. Seek Constructive Feedback

Feedback is a valuable tool for growth. Ask for feedback from people you trust to be honest and supportive, not just those who’ll tell you what you want to hear.

Don’t take constructive criticism personally but use it to get better.

Not being perfect doesn’t mean that there is no room for improvement.

6. Focus On The Journey Not The Destination

Instead of obsessing over the end result, pay attention to what you’re learning along the way. Success stories often highlight the end result but the journey is where the real growth happens.

It is easy to brush off someone’s success as being ‘overnight’ without realizing the sacrifices made to get there.

Valuing the process over the outcome helps you appreciate your efforts and growth.

Fake It Till You Make It?

When it comes to building confidence, you would have probably heard the phrase “Fake it till you make it”.

It means acting confident and capable even when you’re not feeling that way. Do it long enough and confidence will come with time.

I find that it works well as a crutch when you are first starting out but ultimately real confidence needs to come from within or it can easily shatter like glass.

Pros

  • Boosts Courage: Just acting confident can give you the push you need to try new things like Bungie jumping
  • Improves Skills: By pretending you’re good at something, you might get better at it
  • Changes Perceptions: Others might start seeing you as more confident and capable which can open up opportunities

Cons

  • Stress And Anxiety: Keeping up a facade can be stressful. It’s tiring to pretend to be something you’re not
  • Not Fixing The Root Problem: If you keep pretending, you might ignore the real causes of your lack of confidence.
  • Authenticity Issues: Being fake can harm your relationships and reputation
