Achieving More By Doing Less (A Fresh Perspective)

Have you ever felt tired from trying to do it all? What if I told you that doing less could help you achieve more? It might boggle your mind but it’s true. Instead of always being busy, taking a step back could be the key to success.

This idea goes against everything we’ve been taught since young. But by choosing what we focus on more carefully, we can be more productive.

Let’s dive into how taking it easy can lead to better results and a happier life.

The Myth Of Busy = Productive

Being busy all the time doesn’t mean we’re focusing on the right things. We tend to fill our time with tasks that aren’t important, just to feel like we’re doing something (sounds familiar?)

This can lead us away from our main goals and reduce our overall productivity.

Overworking can have serious effects on both our minds and bodies. Too much work without enough rest can lead to stress, burnout and a decrease in creativity.

We might start feeling overwhelmed, anxious or even depressed because we’re pushing ourselves too hard. Not taking breaks can lead to tiredness, weakened immune systems and other health problems.

The 80/20 Rule For Time Management

The 80/20 Rule or Pareto Principle tells us that 80% of our results come from just 20% of our efforts.

This idea can help you manage your time better by showing you which tasks are important and make a big difference with the least work.

It suggests that only a few of the things you do (20%) lead to most of your success and achievements (80%). So instead of trying to do everything and wearing yourself out, you should focus on those few tasks that help you reach your goals.

  • Identify High-Impact Activities: Start by analyzing your tasks to determine which ones contribute most significantly to your goals.
  • Prioritize Your Tasks: Ensure that you allocate sufficient time and resources to these tasks before anything else.
  • Minimize Low-Impact Activities: Look for ways to reduce activities that don’t contribute much to your goals or eliminate them altogether.
  • Evaluate and Adjust Regularly: Regularly review your activities and outcomes to adjust your focus.

Say Yes To Less

In today’s busy world, learning to say “yes” to fewer things is important. This doesn’t mean shrinking away from your responsibilities. It’s about being smart with what you choose to take on.

By picking the tasks that really matter to you, you make sure you’re using your time and energy on things that help you reach your personal and work goals.

Knowing which tasks to accept is key.

Saying “yes” to something means you might have to say “no” to something else that could be more important. Choosing carefully helps you avoid taking on too much and feeling overwhelmed.

You might think back and think that you should have said yes instead of no but things are always clearer on hindsight.

Harnessing The Power Of Routine

Making your daily routine simpler will help your day to run smoothly from the start. It’s all about being efficient and making sure everything you do counts.

It’s about zeroing in on what’s important and cutting out the extra stuff that eats up your time but doesn’t help you get anywhere.

Take your morning routine, for example. If it’s too complicated, you might start your day feeling tired instead of refreshed. A friend of mine once asked me why he seemed to be so unproductive in the morning.

Upon further questioning, his morning routine consists of an hour of yoga, 30 minutes of cardio, 45 minutes of reading affirmations and some journalling to end it all off.

I told him to just pick one activity for each morning instead of wasting so much time on a ‘routine’.

Learn To Embrace Boredom

Feeling bored can actually be good for your brain. When you’re bored your mind isn’t busy with tasks or distractions which means it can think more freely.

Boredom Boosts Creativity

When you’re doing nothing, your mind starts to wander and that’s when creativity can kick in. Without all the usual distractions, your brain can make new connections and come up with fresh ideas.

The next time you’re bored and daydreaming, you might just think of a great new idea or solve a problem you’ve been stuck on.

How To Let Boredom Help You

To get the benefits of boredom, you don’t need to aim to be bored all the time. Try to take short breaks or go for a walk without your phone. These quiet moments give your brain a chance to rest and come up with new ideas.

So next time you have a chance to do nothing, see what new thoughts pop into your head.
